Common Google Ads Issues That Drain Your Budget and Kill Performance

Google Ads not working as expected? Here are seven reasons why you might see it again and again.

1. Inaccurate Conversion Tracking

If you’re not tracking the right actions or tracking them incorrectly, you’re flying blind. This means you can’t accurately assess campaign performance, optimize bids, or even tell which keywords and ads are driving real results. Without accurate data, every optimization is a guess.

Stats that matter:

  • 42% of Google Ads accounts track conversions incorrectly
  • Businesses with accurate conversion tracking see up to 50% better ROI from paid ads
  • Campaigns that rely on accurate tracking and smart bidding generate 2X higher conversion rates than those with incomplete data

2. Absence of an Optimal Campaign Structure & Settings

Disorganized campaigns reduce performance, limit control, and drain your budget faster than you’d think.

A well-structured account is the foundation of long-term success, but too often, we find accounts struggling with the following common issues:

  • Overlapping keywords causing cannibalization – This leads to inefficient ad spend and reduced overall performance
  • Improper geo-targeting – Are you reaching the right audience in the right locations? In 60% of the accounts we’ve audited, ads were shown in irrelevant locations, simply due to incorrect location settings
  • Auto-applied recommendations – Letting Google make unchecked changes, especially to budgets or bid strategies, can quickly derail performance. Google doesn’t always align with your specific business goals

3. Gaps in Platform Knowledge and Strategic Expertise

Running Google Ads effectively is also about knowing how to guide them. Without the right know-how, even decent strategies can quietly bleed budget and stall growth.

Here are some of the most common red flags we’ve seen in underperforming accounts:

  • Higher traffic сosts – 80% of the accounts we’ve audited overpaid for traffic. It’s usually due to poor bid strategy choices or lack of bidding control. Automated bidding without oversight often inflates CPCs with little return
  • Campaigns saturated with branded traffic – Branded keywords often convert well but they don’t bring in new customers. If most of your results come from brand terms, you’re not growing
  • Reactive campaign management – Frequent tweaks to your campaigns negatively affect Google’s algorithm and learning phases. Instead of improving results, over-optimization often leads to inconsistent delivery, unstable metrics, and declining performance
  • Absence of regular A/B testing – If you’re not testing headlines, creatives, landing pages, or strategies, you’re not optimizing. You’re missing opportunities to improve performance and insights that can drive real growth

4. Unoptimized Google Merchant Center (for eCommerce Businesses)

Google Merchant Center is more than just a product feed upload tool. In fact, it’s a performance engine for your Shopping Ads. If your feed is incomplete or poorly optimized, your ads may receive limited visibility and campaigns can fail to gain traction.

Common issues include missing required attributes (like GTINs, product categories, or condition), vague titles and descriptions, low-quality images, mismatched data, or regular disapproval.

But it’s not just about avoiding errors. GMC also offers powerful features that many advertisers overlook:

  • Merchant promotions (e.g., “15% off”, “Free Shipping” or coupon codes) help your products stand out
  • Product ratings and reviews can boost trust and CTR
  • Annotations like “Fast Delivery”, “Sale”, or “Price Drop” increase click-through rates
  • Custom labels, automated feed rules, and dynamic updates enable smarter segmentation, bidding, and campaign control

Note! In our audits, around 80% of eCommerce accounts had poorly optimized feeds or were missing powerful features in GMC.

5. Undefined Business Objectives and KPIs

If your overall business goals aren’t clear and measurable, your marketing efforts, including Google Ads, will lack focus and direction.

Without defined objectives and key performance indicators, it’s impossible to evaluate success or make data-driven decisions.

6. Low-Converting Website or Landing Pages

Even the most effective Google Ads strategy can’t overcome a low website conversion rate.

While ads drive traffic, a poorly optimized site or landing page fails to turn visitors into customers, thus wasting your time and budget.

  • Fact 1: 53% of mobile users will abandon a website if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load
  • Fact 2: Conversion rate optimization and A/B website testing can boost conversions by an average of 49% when applied consistently

7. Ignoring the Competitors

Not analyzing competitors means missing key insights on pricing, positioning, ad strategy, and other valuable insights that could strengthen your own performance. Without this intelligence, you risk duplicating efforts, missing trends, or losing valuable market share.

  • Fact 1: 60% of marketers say they’ve used competitive insights to drive strategic shifts in their digital advertising
  • Fact 2: 48% of businesses admit they’ve lost market share because they didn’t keep up with competitor activity
  • Fact 3: Marketers who leverage competitive insights are 2X more likely to exceed revenue targets
